It’s a beautiful day for a ride. Blue skies, just cool enough for your leather to make you sweat, and almost no wind speak of. So, you gear up and head out the door. Key in the ignition, pull the choke and hit the little black button (or kick her over if you’re legit). As you level off the choke, your ride starts to hum. Wait, do you hear that?

There’s a pinging sound coming from your engine. It’s subtle, but it’s definitely there. Don’t you hear it? Of course you can, but you’ve stopped paying attention.

It’s common to put on blinders when you run an ailing engine. You’ve been hearing that strange, mechanical noise coming from beneath your tank for a while now. It’s getting worse, but you don’t notice because you’ve stopped listening. Putting your head in the sand is no way to be a responsible vintage motorcycle caretaker.

At some point in their learning process, most riders will discover that their motorcycle has developed a new, odd sound. If you’re inexperienced, you may wonder if you’re hearing things. Maybe it’s always made that sound. Nope. When new, your now-vintage motorcylce ran like a jet fighter. It had the smooth, buttery sound of a brand-new Ferrari, only meaner. If you think you hear something, you almost certainly do.

Don’t let that pinging or clatter go undiagnosed. Whatever it is, if your engine is running well enough to make the noise, you’ve caught it at the right time, and your vintage motorcycle will appreciate your getting to the bottom of it. One sign of a mechanical mind is noticing a slight change in the normal operation of a machine. The slighter that change, the less of a problem you’ve likely discovered. But, like a snowball rolling down a hill, that minor engine issue can build, until it suddenly become a catastrophic

If your beloved vintage motorcycle develops an odd pinging sound, investigate immediately. It could be something extremely minor, like running too-low octane fuel. Fail to make this correction and learn to live with the noise, and that minor detonation will cause bigger issues. It could be a lean mixture, or it could be a poorly timed ignition spark. One thing is for sure, though: That noise is the sound of your pistons taking a beating. If left unchecked, they will fail.
