Primary chains are responsible for transferring engine power to the transmission - a significant job to be sure. When they stretch and wear they become inefficient - can slap and mar the case and in extreme cases take out other components leaving you kicking rocks in the parking lot. Even when maintained and properly tensioned they have a lifespan like any other chain.
