Eugene du Plessis' 1975 Honda CL360
Cafe racers are an interesting creature. How can something be so simple, yet so sumptuous? Well, DCC customers seem to keep finding new ways to keep this old paradox alive.
The latest customer to bless our inbox was Eugene du Plessis from Santa Monica, CA with his '75 Honda CL360.
"This project started back in November 2015, when I found this for sale on Craigslist for $400", says Eugene. "It was all in a million pieces in several boxes." Crazy how times have changed, as Honda released a trifecta of "360" models in 1974 that were all available for under $1,000 brand new.
"I didn't have a proper garage so I had to keep it at my sisters house in Long Beach, limiting me from working as much as I would've liked."
But, that didn't slow down Eugene's passion and determination to bring this CL build to fruition.
"Getting parts like the rearsets, mini tach and speedometer were an absolute must for the look I was going for. I made the seat myself using plywood and foam to make a mold for the carbon fiber layer. I also stitched the upholstery myself, which I plan to replace with different fabric sometime soon."
The original paint job got botched after a friend of Eugene's sent him to a friend of theirs. Luckily, he found a guy that told Eugene he'd keep the cost down if he did all the prep work for the paint job, which he was happy to complete. It sure did turn out awesome, definitely has that SoCal vibe!
"I had a lot of help from the 360 expert crazypj with rebuilding my carbs to work with aftermarket filters. I still intend to do a Suzuki 850 piston swap sometime soon."
